What Are Progressive Lenses?

Progressive lenses are the solution to aging eyes and they’re so much more than no-line bifocals. As we age, our intraocular lens begins to harden and our power of accommodation is reduced. As this happens, presbyopia sets in, or a decreased ability to see things close up. For some individuals, a prescription for distance vision is also a necessity. A progressive lens is the perfect solution and allows for a reading addition without that dreaded visible line that intersects the lenses in bifocals.

What’s the difference between progressives and bifocals? It’s all in the name. Bifocals only give you two focal lengths as opposed to the progressive range found in multifocal lenses. A progressive lens’s power “progresses” seamlessly from a distance to an intermediate range and into the near area.

There are several key advantages of progressive lenses. The lenses currently in production are nothing like those of the past. Top of the line lenses are all digitally surfaced and reduce aberration while increasing the useable lens area. Because of the separation between the near and far prescription in bifocals, there is often an image jump. Progressive lenses eliminate this by providing a smooth depth of focus in a no-line design.

Bifocals and trifocals can make viewing objects at intermediate distances, such as a computer screen, uncomfortable. This sometimes compromises posture, because wearers must adjust their eye and head movements. Progressives maintain the natural movement of the head and neck. The lenses also have a wider viewing zone for clear peripheral vision. Eye fatigue and strain are reduced, promoting better concentration and comfort.

Due to technological advances, progressive lenses can even work in smaller frames. The thinner, no-line construction gives a more youthful appearance. Vision correction is not only practical, but also more aesthetically pleasing.
