5 Tips for Younger Looking Eyes

When we’re young, we can pull an all-nighter and somehow still look well rested, balanced and bright-eyed but as we age, the area around the eyes doesn’t bounce back quite as well. The skin there is fragile and over time, it gets thinner and we lose fat and collagen. With that, puffiness, lines and wrinkles from squinting, smoking and sun damage (the ones from smiling are just a sign you’re doing things right if you ask us), dark circles and other concerns set in, which is often when we start thinking, “Wow. My eyes look old and tired no matter what I do.”

The good news is, that’s not actually true. There’s plenty you can do to get brighter, younger looking eyes. Taking preventative measures, like wearing sunglasses, making sure your eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions are correct, eating right and slathering on the SPF every day, will go a long way but there’s also immediate steps you can take too. Here are the Spectacle Shoppe’s top five tips for youner looking eyes.

Get More Sleep for Younger Looking Eyes

As far as how to get younger looking eyes at home, there’s nothing more effective than sleep. We know, it’s easier said than done. There never seem to be enough hours in the day but getting enough sleep is so, so important for your health and wellbeing. Additionally, the idea of “beauty” sleep is based in fact. When we’re sleeping, the cells in the skin repair and rebuild themselves. It’s also when the body produces new collagen, which keeps skin plump and firm, staving off wrinkles.

When we don’t sleep, we experience puffy eyes and reduced blood flow, making skin look dull and causing the blood to pool under the eyes, hence the dark circles. At that point, using a fancy schmancy eye cream won’t do much because it works at its full potential when, you guessed it, you’re sleeping and blood flow is at its peak and the body’s repair process is in full force.

Everyone needs a different amount of sleep and if you pay attention to your internal cues, you’ll be able to find what works best for you. Generally, however, experts recommend clocking between seven to nine hours every night.

If sleep eludes you, turn in and wake up at the same time every day, keep your room dark, avoid cell phones, laptops and other devices in the hour or two leading up to bedtime and create a relaxing, night time ritual like soaking in the tub or enjoying a cup of chamomile tea.

Moisturize Around the Eyes

After getting enough sleep, the next most effective measure on any list of how to make your eyes look younger without makeup or drastic measures is moisturizing. When skin is dry, which under the eyes tends to be, it shows wrinkles and lines. Moisturizer plumps the skin and fills in the cracks and crevices.

Since the skin around the eyes is so delicate, apply products carefully. Use your ring finger, which is weak and less likely to pull at the skin, to gently dab cream starting at the inner corners of your eyes and working your way along the contour out towards the outer corners.

If you have any leftover, apply it to the brow bone. There are a ton of different eye creams and serums on the market, so choose one to fit your needs. For puffiness and bags, opt for a gel (store it in the fridge for further de-puffing) or a formula with caffeine in it to temporarily tighten the skin and reduce swelling in the morning. Eye creams with hyaluronic acid work well for crepey under eyes and products with retinol are good to use at night for fine lines and crow’s feet.

Quit Smoking

Much like getting enough sleep, quitting smoking will vastly improve your overall health as well as your appearance. According to research, after age, smoking was the main predictor of facial wrinkles in men and women, so if you’re on a quest for younger looking eyes, smoking won’t help you get there. Nicotine causes the blood vessels in the top layer of skin to narrow, impairing blood flow, which not only leads to wrinkles but also puffiness and dark circles.

The chemicals in cigarettes are harmful to the collagen and elastin that give skin its firmness, elasticity and strength. The sooner you quit, the better off you’ll be. There are even a number of smoking cessation programs in BC aimed at helping residents quit if you’re struggling.

Wear Glasses that Complement Your Face

Choosing flattering eyewear is another tried and true way to get younger looking eyes. When your glasses don’t complement your face shape or the style is really outdated, it can age you. Go with a shape that balances your facial features. Frames with upturned corners, like a cat-eye style, draw the eye up and make your face look lifted.

Don’t be afraid of color either! Depending on your skin tone and eye color, certain shades could add warmth or make your eyes look bigger and brighter. Use Makeup Wisely

Obviously, you can wear makeup and look fabulous at any age. However, there are some tricks that will give you wider, brighter, younger looking eyes:

  • Use a quality primer on your eyelids. This will soak up any excess oil and create a smooth surface so that the shadow doesn’t settle into lines and crevices.
  • Less is more with concealer, particularly when you’re using it under the eyes. If you go too heavy handed, it will work its way into lines and look cakey. Moisturize before putting it on. Then, apply a tiny bit with your ring finger or a makeup brush and focus it on the inner corners of your eyes before blending it out.
  • Use an eye shadow with just a slight shimmer to make eyes look brighter but stay away from full-on glitter or heavy metallic hues. Earth tones are always a sure bet.
  • Make your eyes pop and look wide awake by curling lashes with an eyelash curler and then applying two or three coats of jet-black mascara.
  • To combat drooping upper eyelids, use a tapered brush to recreate the contour with taupe eye shadow. Blend it just above your creases out to the outer corners of the eyes.
  • Thin eyebrows can look severe. Fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil and give eyes a lift.

A healthy lifestyle, a great moisturizer and makeup savvy can all give you younger looking eyes. However, it really boils down to confidence. When you’re happy with how you look, you instantly appear refreshed, vibrant and youthful. That’s something we can help with – at least in the eyewear department.
