A Fun Look at Vancouver Neighbourhoods and their Matching Glasses

I adore Vancouver. You get the benefits of urban living with access to the great outdoors and breathtaking scenery. There’s really nowhere else like it in the world. It’s an amazingly diverse city that seamlessly blends so many different cultures. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Vancouverites from all walks of life while working at our Vancouver glasses and eyewear store in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood. While I have to say, the people who frequent the Spectacle Shoppe are all unique and many of the Vancouver stereotypes just aren’t true. However, I thought I’d have a little fun by breaking down some Vancouver personality types and matching them with their ideal glasses.

Vancouver Personalities and Their Matching Glasses

Downtown Chic

Downtown Vancouver has that cosmopolitan feel. You can take in the arts and culture, dine at a renowned restaurant, spend the day shopping or just as easily stop by a brewery and eat delicious street food. The downtown area is chic but also boasts that relaxed, vibrant atmosphere Vancouver is known for. Our pick: Kate Spade Deeann. The sophisticated frames easily translate from day to night. With metal fronts and plastic temples, they’re polished but still fun.

Commercial Drive Cool

The Drive is an eclectic mix of residents from a range of ethnicities and backgrounds and really speaks to the diversity of Vancouver. It’s laidback and colorful. With indie cafes and boutiques, festivals galore, amazing coffee and pretty much every type of cuisine, Commercial Drive fits the bill for “cool.” Our pick: Volte Face Bali. These frames are in line with the Drive’s bohemian flavor with their slightly oversize rectangular shape and a melding of colors (tortoiseshell and bright, bold purple).

Main Street Hip

Main Street is an up and coming area with independent shops and restaurants and a younger demographic. It was actually named one of the 15 “coolest streets” in North America by Cushman and Wakefield, which doesn’t really surprise me. The residents and frequenters of Main Street probably see trends coming from a mile away. Our pick: Volte Face Giselle. These frames combine several of the features coveted by the hip crowd including tortoiseshell, clear acetate and a cat-eye shape.

Yaletown Trendy

Yaletown is a historical district with no shortage of style. There are tons of cool restaurants, unique boutiques and a stellar nightlife scene. Our pick: O&X OP-238U. These frames are on trend with an oversized rectangular shape, understated pops of colors and a bit of a vintage feel.

Kitsilano Eco-Friendly

This casual beachside neighbourhood is home to a lot of young professionals and families. You’ll find Kits has a relaxed vibe and yoga enthusiasts and people dedicated to green living are abundant. Though, who wouldn’t want to preserve the gorgeous environment? Our pick: Etnia Vintage Shoreditch. The frames feature a round shape that calls to mind the area’s hippie past but with a modern twist. Plus, Etnia’s acetate is made from cotton and it’s a 100% natural material.

North Shore Active

Vancouver’s North Shore is all about the outdoor adventures from hiking to mountain biking. Glasses for this type of BC resident would have to be durable and able to withstand their active lifestyle. We’d probably go with sunglasses to keep their eyes protected from the sunshine in the summer and the light reflecting from the snow in the winter. Our pick: Rudy Project Zyon. These unisex wraparound sunglasses are functional and comfortable but still sleek.

Kerrisdale Charm

Kerrisdale Village is a quaint little area featuring tons of shops (like the Spectacle Shoppe!) and services along its tree-lined streets and has a bustling business district. The people are friendly and charming. I’d say the style is classic and business casual with some quirky fun thrown into the mix. Our pick: Alain Mikli A03044 CO24. With the fashion-forward oversized design, classic rectangular shape, funky pattern and a bold red accent color, these acetate frames are fresh but still timeless.
